European Duathlon Championships, Edinburgh

Published by admin under Events

Hello everyone,

It’s Sunday morning and I am tight and sore. I thought I’d have a wee hangover but I was so tired last night that I wimped out of even having one drink at the awards ceremony. I was happy to get to bed after a long day!

It was a great race for me. One of those days when everything goes according to plan.

The first run was comfortable – I had thought that Alessandra and Laura (who both ran faster at Worlds) would set a fast pace – or at least try to make a gap at some point on the run. However, I was able to sit back and relax in the pack waiting for the bike. The conditions were brutally Scottish with a gale force wind and Scotch mist which had Arthur’s Seat resembling a scene from Lord of the Rings! I sat tight on the first lap to see how strong the other girls were going to be. On the first technical descent it was obvious that the conditions and the course were going to favour me. Using the first part of the climb back up to transition two of the pack of four had dropped back. Coming onto the short sharp section of the climb I increased the pace slightly and Alessandra dropped of my wheel. From then on it was a lonely but fun bike ride. The spectators were great and all I had to do was hold it all together for the last 5K!

Home advantage is a great thing and I am happy to have achieved my main goal of the first half of my season. My next target is the World Long Distance Triathlon in Lorient, France. A new event for me. I have a month to get some long bike and swim preparation under my belt. I start next weekend with the Scottish 50 mile Cycling Time Trial in Invergordon.

Today I think I will have a rest.
